Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The MD/DO provides comprehensive medical services within the scope of their training, including diagnosis, treatment, and supervision of patient care. The physician ensures care adheres to state and federal regulations and is sensitive to the cultural and community needs of the population served, including Native American communities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Physician (MD/DO) is responsible for providing direct patient care, including performing examinations, diagnosing conditions, and delivering appropriate treatments. This includes prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests, and referring patients to specialists when necessary. Physicians must also ensure proper documentation and compliance with billing, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Additionally, they are responsible for supervising mid-level providers, such as Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, to ensure clinical protocols are followed.

Collaboration is a key component of the role. Physicians are expected to work closely with other healthcare providers and support staff to coordinate patient care effectively. This involves educating patients and their families about treatment plans, preventive care, and recovery options. Physicians also collaborate with community resources, such as local hospitals and mental health providers, to manage complex cases requiring specialized or emergency care.

Physicians must actively engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with medical advancements and techniques. Participation in continuous quality improvement initiatives is essential to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, they may be required to take part in on-call services and community outreach efforts, providing healthcare education and services to the broader population.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Doctor of Medicine. Graduation from an accredited medical or osteopathic school.
Completion of residency program in a relevant specialty (e.g., Family Medicine, Internal Medicine).
Board Certification or Board Eligibility in specialty.
Valid California medical license, DEA certification, and BLS certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working within a Native American Health Care Clinic environment.

Requirements:

Valid California state license to practice medicine.
Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation and be free of any felony convictions.
Must have a vehicle, valid California driver’s license (or ability to obtain with 30 days of hire), vehicle insurance.
Must be insurable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing stepstools, etc., stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching; pushing, pulling and lifting up to 30 pounds; raising objects overhead; manual dexterity for operation of computer, phones and small office machines; hearing, talking and good verbal and written communication skills; repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers.

Preference in filling vacancies will be given to qualified Native American or Alaskan Native Applicants, in accordance with the Indian preference Act (Title 25, U.S. Code Section 472 and 473) and Public Law 93-638, provided the applicant has submitted appropriate verification of Indian preference for employment. In House postings include Tribal Voting Members.

All positions require sensitivity to Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs, and ability at times to meet and deal effectively with numerous tribes and varied cultures, which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.
